QR code print size guide
Most scanning problems come from codes printed too small, with low contrast or without a clear margin.
The 10 to 1 rule
Make the code at least one tenth of the distance people scan from. The check on the last step of the QR code maker does this for you.
| Where | Scan distance | Code width |
|---|---|---|
| Business card | 15 to 20 cm | 2 to 2.5 cm |
| Flyer, menu, table | 30 cm | 3 cm |
| Poster at arm's length | 50 cm | 5 cm |
| Door or counter | 1 m | 10 cm |
| Shop window | 2 m | 20 cm |
| Sign or banner | 5 m | 50 cm |
Three more rules
- Clear margin: leave empty space around the code of at least 4 modules (the standard, ISO/IEC 18004).
- Contrast: a dark code on a light background, at least 4.5 to 1 and ideally 7 to 1 for print. Avoid light codes on dark backgrounds.
- Module size: each small square at least 0.33 mm, and 0.5 mm or more is safer. Shorter content makes bigger modules at the same size.
Questions
What is the minimum size for a QR code?
About 2 cm wide for a short link scanned up close. Contact cards and long text need more. Modules (the small squares) should be at least 0.33 mm, and 0.5 mm is safer.
How do I work out the size for a poster or sign?
Divide the scan distance by 10. From 2 m away, make the code at least 20 cm wide.
Which file should I send to a print shop?
PDF or EPS. They are vector files, so they stay sharp at any size. SVG works for most design apps.
